I want to start out by saying that I loved the first and only Poltergeist (1982) directed by Steven Spielberg. And today’s Poltergeist (2015) is a classic horror reboot directed by Gil Kenan and produced by veteran horror icon Sam Raimi. But this new film is actually less scary, has subpar writing, has a less credible plot and has worst special effects than the original Poltergeist which was released 33 years ago. This modern version or Poltergeist2.0 has unmemorable D-level actors in the role of the jaded unemployed dad, Eric Bowen (Sam Rockwell), the clueless, naïve suburban mother, Amy Bowen (Rosemarie Dewitt), the weak, easily spooked son, Griffin Bowen (Kyle Catlet) the typical emotional and moody teenage daughter, Kendra Bowen (Saxon Sharbino) and youngest innocent and friendly daughter Madison Bowen (Kenndei Clements).
There was almost reckless writing and lackadaisical direction in Poltergeist2.0 makes every scary moment predict table and unbelievable even for a demonic possessed house story. For example, when Madison suddenly disappears in her closet that is where Poltergeist2.0 jumps the shark fort real. In the 1982 Poltergeist the disappearance of the young daughter meant that the family immediately called the local police to help find her. And it was only when the family had exhausted all rational and traditional means to find their daughter whom they think has been abducted by spirits. In this lame Poltergeist2.0 the Bowen family realizes that their daughter is missing and they inexplicably decide to not call the police or FBI for help. No these dummies immediately call collegiate paranormal investigators and a fake reality show “Ghostbuster” Carrigan Burke (Jared Harris). No sensible parent in 2015 believes in ghosts more than real sexual predators. I could go on for days about this horrible horror film. I give Poltergeist (2015) $ and you should run to YouTube and watch the one and only Poltergeist (1982) instead.
